Gas Flow Controllers in Combustion: Operating Checks

Knowledge Library

Flowmethod's guidance for combustion applications highlights six operating issues that can affect gas-flow reliability. Gas-flow regulation is only one part of a combustion system: required flame safeguards, emergency isolation and gas-safety functions must be provided by the appropriate approved equipment and system design.

1. Unfiltered gas contamination

Particles can enter sensing passages and valves, changing performance or damaging components. Provide appropriate upstream filtration for the gas and instrument, and maintain or replace elements according to their instructions.

2. Pressure below the operating envelope

Do not reduce supply pressure below the conditions required by the ordered configuration merely to extract more gas from a cylinder. Confirm both inlet and outlet pressure, the available differential pressure, and appropriate pressure monitoring or alarms.

3. Incomplete vaporization of liquefied gas

In cold conditions, insufficiently vaporized LPG can carry liquid into the gas path and contaminate or obstruct a thermal flow instrument. Use a gas-supply and vaporization arrangement suitable for the fuel and confirm that only the approved gas phase reaches the instrument. Heating and vaporizer maintenance require the system supplier's guidance.

4. A generic instrument that does not match the process

A process prioritizing steady regulation and one requiring rapid dynamic changes may need different configurations. Provide gas, actual flow range, pressure and response requirements so the engineer can assess the appropriate setup.

5. Excessive ambient heat

A confined hot enclosure can affect electronics and measured performance. Leave appropriate heat-dissipation space and observe the exact model's temperature rating. The archived guide uses above 50 °C as a situation requiring particular attention; it is not a common limit for every current model. Confirm any high-temperature configuration before ordering.

6. Unsuitable seal material

Check seals and all wetted materials against the actual fuel, corrosive constituents and temperature. Oxygen is an oxidizer, not a fuel, and requires its own compatibility and cleanliness assessment. A general-purpose elastomer must not be assumed suitable for every gas.

Flowmethod supports application selection, installation information and custom configuration assessment. Examples such as high-temperature service, liquid-carryover protection or a wider pressure envelope require an agreed engineered solution; they are not automatic properties of every catalogue model.
