Flow instrument types: turbine flow meters

Knowledge Library

Turbine flow meters measure flow by placing a turbine in the flow path. Moving fluid rotates the turbine, and its rotational speed is related to the fluid velocity. A pickup coil detects the blade motion and generates an electrical signal from which the flow rate is calculated.

Turbine instruments can provide good accuracy and resistance to interference, but their performance depends on fluid properties. They are generally used with clean, low-viscosity liquids or clean gases. A turbine meter normally measures volumetric flow; obtaining mass flow also requires a suitable density measurement or conversion. It should not be confused with the thermal gas mass flow meters in Flowmethod's current product range.
