If a gas mass flow controller in a combustion application does not operate normally, check external conditions before assuming an internal failure.
Five initial checks
- Wiring: verify power, command, feedback and signal reference against the exact pinout. Safely isolate the system before changing wiring.
- Pressure: confirm inlet and outlet conditions match the ranges agreed when ordering.
- Restrictions: check for blocked tubing, sharp bends or other flow bottlenecks.
- Gas cleanliness: confirm the gas is dry and free of particles, liquid carryover and oil contamination.
- Command and feedback: verify the actual electrical signals. For a 0–5 V command, zero flow normally corresponds to 0 V; for a 4–20 mA command, zero flow normally corresponds to 4 mA. Do not apply a voltage example to a current input.
A wiring correction can restore operation only if the instrument has not already been damaged. Suspected circuit damage or sensor contamination requires manufacturer analysis or repair.
Gas-flow regulation does not replace the approved burner safeguards or independent isolation required by the combustion system. Perform any testing with a safe gas-handling arrangement and qualified personnel.

Flowmethod designs, develops, manufactures and supports gas mass flow controllers, meters and custom gas-control and mixing systems. Configurations are matched to the customer's process and operating requirements.
