Flow Measurement Principles: Coriolis Meters

Knowledge Library

This article describes a Coriolis mass flow meter, one of the main mass-flow measurement principles. It is different from the thermal gas mass flow products in Flowmethod's current selection pages.

A drive system vibrates a measuring tube. Flow through the vibrating tube produces Coriolis-related motion, and sensors measure the resulting time/phase relationship. The instrument converts this response to mass flow.

Coriolis instruments can measure many liquids and, with an appropriately selected design, some gases. Viscosity, entrained gas, fluid density, pressure loss and operating conditions still need to be assessed. Their direct mass-flow principle does not mean every model is immune to all pressure, temperature or installation effects.

External vibration and mechanical installation can affect performance. Use the chosen model's support and installation requirements. There is no universal 150 mm pipe-diameter limit for the Coriolis principle: available sizes and limits depend on the manufacturer and design. Low-density or low-pressure gas service may be more demanding and requires explicit sizing and performance confirmation.
